Yoga brings not only physical health, but also mental health. It teaches one how to conquer obstacles so that one can live peacefully and in perfect happiness to achieve the goal of life – Self-Realization. ~ Geetha Iyengar
Catharine Vaucher teaches Iyengar Yoga in the Princeton area. Below are general descriptions to help guide you in choosing a class.
All yoga classes are taught using the Iyengar method’s science of sequencing and inspired by the art and philosophy of yoga as taught by B.K.S Iyengar, Geetha Iyengar, Prashant Iyengar and Abhijata Iyengar. From week to week, classes are uniquely designed to guide students in discovering fresh perspectives and deeper dimensions in their practice of asana and pranayama.
My teaching style involves demonstration, verbal instruction and adjustments when needed. Props are used as educational tools for students to learn the actions of an asana; they are also used as support to stay longer in a pose to more deeply experience its benefits. Within a single class or from week to week, I enjoy helping students develop their capacity (alignment, breath, balance, strength, mobility, confidence) for approaching more and more challenging asanas with clarity and freedom.
Basics/New to Iyengar Yoga
Students learn the foundation of Iyengar Yoga and are taught basic postures and actions which are fundamental to a yoga practice. Emphasis is on standing poses, learning basic forward and backward extensions, twists and shoulder stand. A good class for new students, students from other yoga traditions and students who want to focus on the basics.
Intermediate
A faster-paced, more in depth class for students with experience in Iyengar Yoga. Students will learn dynamic actions for inversions, arm balances and backward extensions. Restorative and Pranayama are taught.
Catharine’s teaching is so alive, so exploratory. She is the teacher to help you change your habits and the stagnation that comes with them. ~ AB
Mixed Level
Beginner through more experienced students are welcome, however previous yoga experience is recommended. Classes are paced to accommodate a variety of levels; modifications are provided as needed. A good class for Beginners to try new poses, and for more experienced students to practice more challenging poses from a strong foundation.
Gentle
A moderately paced class that is good for Beginners and individuals of any age and physical condition. Poses are modified to accommodate individual needs.
Restorative
Restorative classes are made up of rejuvenating and supported postures that are sequenced to soothe the nervous system and alleviate tension. Restorative postures consist of Inversions, supine poses, Backward Extensions and Forward Extensions–all modified with props to stay longer in the pose, breathe more deeply, and learn to let go. Pranayama (breath control) is practiced in the class. One year of regular Iyengar Yoga practice is strongly recommended for understanding of alignment and practice of headstand and shoulder stand.
Private Sessions
For students who seek a one-on-one learning experience. Private sessions are uniquely designed to focus on the client’s interests and health needs. Experienced in working with clients in the following areas: scoliosis, back pain, shoulder issues, knees issues, menstrual issues, pregnancy and preparing for birth.
